This is an introduction to me as a person rather than a service. The sort of thing you imagine you would write for your ‘About’ page on your website before you find out work out or get told (quite alarmingly) that your About page is nothing really about you, but everything about the solutions you have to other peoples’ problems.
I have always been a physical maker. I was raised in a family where people made things for a pass-time, for need and for practicality. It gave me a deep-seated belief that making gives people good values for life. It teaches respect for the time invested not just in making the work, but also the time invested in developing the skill. By the time I finished a FdA in Furniture Design and Making in my late-thirties I was convinced that good design could save the world and that’s where society’s focus should be.
By the time I’d finished teacher training and completed a BA in Contemporary Creative Practice, my view on the purpose of art in life had changed. Life had chucked me a curve-ball and my priorities shifted. Now I honestly believe that there are times when art makes life possible. An anchor when there’s nothing else, or the cherry on the top when all is tickety-boo.
So why Flaming Pearl and what am I doing here?
I love to hang out in artists’ studios. I love to chat with artists about their work. One of my favourite things to do is connect people who will sweeten each others’ lives and one of my least favourite things is to see beautiful work strewn across floors, tables and against walls when it could be giving someone pleasure. From the artist’s point of view, I understand it. The work is made, the process is complete, the need to create has been met. However, I know a lot of artists. And most of them would like a bit more cash in the bank.
So I’m here to join the dots. I get to help artists get their work seen and sold, I get to work from anywhere I choose and I help bring more art into people’s lives. Triple win.
As for the name, I’ve always felt drawn to the Chinese symbolism of the Flaming Pearl. Traditionally they represent good luck, prosperity, wisdom and truth. I personally also associate the rising sun with a flaming pearl. Sun rises and sunsets, particularly over water are a bit of a personal obsession as my social media will show. My desk is pretty tidy but I don’t think it’s as inspiring as the dawn and I’m all for more skies, less screens.
Thank you for visiting my blog today and learning these things about me. If you’ve got this far we’d probably get on well in ‘real’ life so do please drop me a line below or follow me on one of my social media channels so that I can get to know you a little in return.
